            This plover is a circumpolar breeder, mainly in the High Arctic. There is a small population in Scotland.  The occurrence in Wales is not unprecedented, but such birds are usually on passage to the Cairngorms. 
The dotterel is an unusual species in that it is polyandrous. Each female may mate with more than one male and lay a different clutch of eggs for each male to incubate more or less simultaneously. Thus it is the female that is brightly coloured, and the male duller, since it is he who alone incubates the eggs, cares for the young and thus has a greater need for camouflage. This strategy is an adaptation to the short breeding season in cold climates.
