Water and air flow (I) - a photo on Flickriver

            This photograph and its sister, Water and air flow (II), are the 2 most expensive and spookiest photographs I have ever taken. If you want to know why, just keep reading because there is a story around what happened when I took them.
Shortly after finding my way to the source of the river Tormes barred by a sizeable stream crossing the path, see Barring the way/Cerrando el paso for a photograph, I decided to use the big stopper neutral density filter at this lovely spot. I mounted the camera on the tripod, fitted the adapter ring, tried a few photographs without the big stopper, had a bit of lunch while I studied the scenery, put the big stopper into the filter adapter, attached the whole thing to the ring, and started taking some photographs. I was feeling uneasy about the setup, I had the camera tilting downwards to achieve the desired composition and my ultra light Manfrotto tripod felt flimsy. Everything went well for a while until something totally unexpected happened: I turned around to get something from my backpack stowed about 2 or 3 metres behind me and as I returned towards the tripod the filter holder detached itself from the lens and fell towards the rock ledge where I had placed the camera, the impact shattered the big stopper into a myriad of pieces. As I reached down, swearing in a couple of languages, to inspect the damage I heard a rumbling to my right, it was a thunder, the clouds over the mountains on the other side of the river had become what looked like a significant storm. As I was in the open several kilometres away from any cover, the swearing stopped and the packing started. I did manage to reach tree cover before the storm slowly rolled over forcing me to done the waterproof clothing I was carrying inside the backpack. Curiously, if the filter had not been shattered to pieces or the stream had not barred my way I would have being caught by the storm in the open, something I am quite happy it did not happen.
