Roof figure, Penshurst - a photo on Flickriver

            Entry to Penshurst is via the original Baron's Hall which dates from 1341. It's 60ft high and still has original chestnut roof timbers. There's a minstrel's gallery and some original medieval glass. The original earthen floor was replaced in the C15th with tiles. In the centre was a fireplace which would have vented out of the roof, now filled in. It would have been the main family room.

At the end of each roof brace is a satirical wooden figure  believed to be a representation of peasants and workers at the manor - 10 in all.
