Bound for Chama via Cumbres Pass - a photo on Flickriver

            On a sparkling clear day in August, Denver & Rio Grande Locomotives #s 168 and 425 haul a passenger train west out of Antonito, CO, bound for Chama, NM via Cumbres Pass.  The train is pictured here, just inside the southern border of Colorado, at the top of the serpentine grade known as "The Whiplash", near Milepost 296.8, not far from Big Horn Peak.

This image was captured during the August, 2021 "Victorian Iron Horse Round-Up" event at the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad.   The photo depicts an operation which would be very authentic to this spot some 100 or more years earlier.   The 1883-vintage #168, a Baldwin T-12 Class 10-wheeler, and the 1895-vintage #425, a Baldwin C-18 Consolidation, were two of five, Victorian-era, narrow gauge locomotives which participated in the event.  On this particular day, this train, and a short freight hauled by wood-burners Eureka & Palisade #4 and Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Fluming Co. #1 took patrons across the entire 64-mile Cumbres & Toltec line, traveling in tandem and stopping periodically for photo opportunities.  Tickets for this pair of cross-railroad excursions were among the most coveted of the entire, 7-day event
