            Das Schloss und seine Baugeschichte
Das Schloss Paffendorf ist eine der vielen Burgen und Herrensitze in der Erftniederung. Die im 16. Jahrhundert erbaute Anlage ist von Wassergräben umgeben und besteht aus dem mehrflügeligen, zweigeschossigen Herrenhaus und der ehemals landwirtschaftlich genutzten Vorburg, die rechtwinklig einen geräumigen Wirtschaftshof umschließt. Zwei wuchtige Rundtürme, diagonal gegenüberstehend, flankieren das Hauptgebäude. Die Vorburg wird an den Ecken von massiven Türmen begrenzt, die mit abgeschrägten Sockeln bis in den damals von Erftwasser gespeisten Graben hinabreichen.
In der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts erhielt das Schloss durch einen grundlegenden Umbau sein neugotisches Aussehen. Ihm verdanken die Gebäude Zinnen, Türmchen, Balustraden und Balkone sowie den figürlichen Schmuck. Als 1958 der fortschreitende Tagebau Fortuna-Garsdorf die zum Schloss gehörenden Ländereien erreichte, verkaufte die damalige Eigentümerin den ganzen Besitz an eine Vorgängergesellschaft von RWE Power.

The castle and its architectural history
Paffendorf Castle is one of the many castles and mansions in the Erft lowlands. The complex, built in the 16th century, is surrounded by moats and consists of the multi-wing, two-story manor house and the outer bailey, which was formerly used for agricultural purposes and which encloses a spacious farm yard at right angles. Two massive round towers, diagonally opposite each other, flank the main building. The outer bailey is bordered at the corners by massive towers with slanted bases that reach down into the moat, which was then fed by Erftwasser.
In the middle of the 19th century, the castle was given its neo-Gothic appearance through a fundamental renovation. The buildings owe their battlements, turrets, balustrades and balconies as well as their figurative decorations to him. When the progressive Fortuna-Garsdorf opencast mine reached the lands belonging to the castle in 1958, the owner at the time sold the entire property to a predecessor company of RWE Power.
