"Portrait of Adolfo Best Maugard" (1913) by Diego Rivera

            This very early work by Diego Rivera was painted shortly after the 1910 Mexican Revolution and shows some of the "progress" during the previous dictatorial regime of Porfirio Diaz. More typical of Cubism than Rivera's later highly distinctive style, it presages his "anti-rich" Marxist tendencies (this painting pre-dates the Russian Revolution by 4 years!).

A fragment of this painting appeared on the entrance ticket for MUNAL, where it was on exhibit.

Translated from the June 2013 issue of "Periodico MUNAL":

"Who was Adolfo Best Maugard? Painter and art promoter. In 1912 made a visit to Europe and made contact with Diego Rivera, Roberto Montenegro and Angel Zarraga. Between 1919 and 1920 settled in New York.  Upon returning to Mexico ...  was Director of the Department of Drawing and Manual Workers of Fine Arts."
