Lilly Martin Spencer (American,1822-1902),Conversation Piece circa 1851-52,oil on canvas

            The only female genre painter painter in the antebellum period,Spencer specialized in themes of domestic life.She used herself and her husband as models in many works,including this one.The baby was probably modeled after their son,Charles Francis,born in 1851,and the setting was likely the couple's own home.A number of decorative elements betray Spencer's French heritage,including the Limoges compote and the Zouave doll on the floor.Two items-the figurine based on the Callipygian Venus and the dangling cherries-may indicate her attempt to enhance the happy scene with explicit symbols of beauty and pleasure.
