Camouflaged - a photo on Flickriver

Camouflaged

            This was the first individual of this species that I saw, but I then proceeded to see many of them throughout the rest of my week in TX last November, most often in webs on cactuses. The majority of them had prolific strings of egg sacs, making the spider difficult to spot, which is the point, in more ways than one; the spider IS the point of that line, at its bottom, and it will often have another line extending down but made up of remnants of its prey. In this way, they're similar to the trashline orbweavers I'm familiar with, and probably why their genus names are so close. The first comment below shows an old photo I took of one of those in the middle of her long "trashline".

This spider's web was relatively bare of decoration except for the one egg sac and a bit of debris above that, but when I first spotted it, I still had difficulty telling what I was looking at because of how nicely matched the coloring and general form of the egg sac is to the spider. This remained the case with every one that I saw, though I learned to look at the lower end of the line of eggs for the spider. You can see how she tucks her bifurcated abdomen tightly up to that egg sac, which is nearly as lumpy as she.
