Tegucigalpa: Iglesia Santa María de los Dolores

            The Iglesia Santa María de los Dolores was constructed in a colonial Baroque style beginning in 1732; it was not completed until 1815 . It was designed by the architect Juan Nepomuceno Cacho. The wonderful Baroque façade shows Marian symbolism. A unique feature is that the green and yellow figures and decorative elements are made out of glazed ceramic.

Initially, the church, as well as the earlier chapel it replaced, primarily served black and mulatto descendants of former African slaves who were brought here to work in nearby mines; it served their Christianization as well as their instruction in the Spanish language. Many of them also helped build this church, which explains the syncretism that is visible in the iconographic program of the façade.
