The briefest glimmers of light in the life of the universe

            I almost didn't make this image.  It came at the tail end of a day spent on Second Beach on the Olympic Peninsula.  We had spent hours walking up and down the beach, each of us in our respective corners photographing what we saw or found.  I had thought myself wrapped up and I knew my partner felt close to the same, so I was patiently awaiting her to finish off her last couple of photos.  But standing there, watching the sun slowly arc over one of the seastacks I had that irrepressible urge to make one more image.  I knew though that I likely didn't have the full length of time that I would want to commit to such a photo.  Images like this I usually like to let run at least 30 minutes, if not an hour, to really get the suntrail.  I figured the moment I set this exposure up and started she would finish up, yet I knew if I didn't start it I might easily be waiting for 30 minutes or more.  It often tends to work out in that Murphy's Law-esque fashion.  So I set up and got the exposure started under calculations for a 60 minute exposure.  As it turned out, I got about 10 minutes in when I saw her packing up and heading my way, looking ready to leave.  I had to do some rough calculations based on exposure done so far and how much more time I would need to complete a full exposure if I opened up the aperture a couple stops, accelerating the work my camera had done.  I ended up begging for five more minutes rounding this exposure out at only about 15 minutes total.  Not as long as I would have initially liked, but at the same time better than no image at all.  And that is the lesson in this one.  Always go for it.  Even a semi-successful, or unsuccessful, attempt is better than no attempt at all.
