Lieven Van de Velde ( 1850 - Léopoldville , 7 février 1888 ) était un pionnier belge de Gand .

À partir de 1882, il explore certaines parties du Congo , avec l'Allemand Eduard Pechuel-Loesche (1840-1913) et le Britannique Grant Elliott . Sur les traces de Henry Morton Stanley , il a conclu des «traités» avec les chefs pour établir l' État indépendant du Congo .

En 1885, il emmena le fils d'un chef congolais en Belgique, qui fut donc probablement le premier Congolais à visiter la Belgique. Ce garçon, Sakala , avait douze ans à l'époque. Il est allé à l'école au Ledeganck et a accompagné Van de Velde à des conférences de propagande. En octobre 1887, ils retournèrent ensemble au Congo. [1] [2] Van de Velde devait devenir capitaine à Stanley Falls , mais il est mort quelques semaines après son arrivée.

Dans le parc de la Citadelle de Gand se trouve le monument à Lieven van de Velde et à son frère Jozef (1855-1882 - qui fut également pionnier au Congo et y mourut). C'est un rocher artificiel avec une pancarte avec les têtes des deux frères. Une statue du jeune Sakala a été placée au sommet du rocher, ce qui a donné au monument le surnom de "'t Moorke".
