Dans les coupoles imaginées par Camillo-Guarino Guarini, les formes géométriques tiennent une place importante. Pas étonnant si l’on sait que ce dernier pratiquait les mathématiques en plus de l’architecture.

Celle de l’église de Saint-Laurent à Turin ne fait pas exception. La symbolique y est aussi très présente puisqu’ici c’est le chiffre 8 qui est à l’honneur. Pour preuve, ce sont 8 paires de nervures en arcs de cercle qui, enjambant les 8 fenêtres principales, se recoupent entre elles et délimitent au centre un octogone régulier autour duquel apparaît une rosace à 8 pétales !

Toutefois, cet enchevêtrement de formes géométriques ne prend toute sa mesure qu’avec l’éclairage qui le transperce de toute part, de façon parfois inattendue. Ce jeu de lignes et de lumières plein de contraste occulte le volume traditionnellement sphérique de la voûte.
