De Drommedaris is de zuidelijke toegangspoort van de stad Enkhuizen. Het is het bekendste gebouw in Enkhuizen.

Het gebouw is neergezet als verdedigingswerk bij de ingang van de Oude Haven, en bevond zich oorspronkelijk op de Westfriese Omringdijk; deze liep vanuit het noorden via de Breedstraat verder langs de Zuiderdijk. Het stuk dijk vlak bij de Drommedaris is later afgegraven voor de aanleg van de Buitenhaven. De geschutskelder en de ruimte op de begane grond dateren uit 1540 en waren het oorspronkelijke bouwwerk. De beide ruimtes bevatten kanonsgaten langs de wanden in nissen waar kanonnen stonden die de havens konden bestrijken. De bovenste ruimte heeft een ribgewelf. Boven het gebouw op het dak stond een bouwsel met daarin gevangeniscellen die nog steeds op de eerste etage in het huidige gebouw zijn terug te vinden. Boven de poort is een cel voor ter dood veroordeelden waar in het eikenhouten beschot jaartallen en soms gedichten zijn gekerfd. Buiten boven de ingang van deze poort was in witte steen het wapen van de Keizer uitgehouwen met eronder de tekst: "Salig is de Stad en hoog gepresen, die peist om oorlog in tijdt van vrede." In een houten klokkenstoel op het dak hing een luidklokje om het sluiten van de poort aan te kondigen.

De oude naam van het gebouw is Zuiderpoort of Ketenpoort en later ook Wilgenburg (voor het bolwerk waar de toren bij hoorde). De benaming Ketenpoort verwijst naar de zoutketen ten zuiden van de stad langs de Zuiderdijk, die via deze poort konden worden bereikt. Hier werd zeewater verdampt om het zout te verkrijgen waar haring mee werd geconserveerd. In de 19e eeuw wordt de naam Drommedaris of Domburg gebruikt. 

Na de Tachtigjarige Oorlog werd het gebouw verhoogd tot de vorm die we nu kennen. Deze bouw duurde van 1649-1657. In de loop der eeuwen was het gebouw in gebruik als opslag van buskruit, gevangenis, wachtkazerne, accijnskantoor, spinnerij/weverij, als telegraafkantoor (onder de poort) en ook de eerste tentoonstelling van het Zuiderzeemuseum vond plaats in het gebouw in de zomer van 1949.

Aan het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd bij een bombardement op de naastgelegen scheepswerf het gebouw ernstig beschadigd. Vooral de poort aan de stadszijde zat vol granaatinslagen. 

Omstreeks 1960 kwam er een studentencentrum in de Drommedaris met op de begane grond een bar. Er werd in de gevangeniscellen en op de zolder geslapen door de studenten, onder wie ook Prinses Beatrix. Later kwam er op de eerste verdieping een café-restaurant en werd de ruimte beneden, net als de tweede etage, een kleine gehoorzaal voor allerlei activiteiten zoals concerten, toneelvoorstellingen en expositieruimte van kunstobjecten. Tegenwoordig is het gebouw alleen in gebruik als cultureel centrum.

Restauraties aan het gebouw zijn verricht in 1914-1915, 1956-1968, 1963 en 1973. In 2012/13/14/15 is het gebouw en de toren met carillon opnieuw gerestaureerd. In het voorjaar van 2015 werd het gebouw weer in gebruik genomen. Sinds de restauratie van 1973 staat op de wijzerplaten het cijfer 4 als IV weergegeven. Daarvoor was dit IIII, zoals gebruikelijker is bij wijzerplaten met Romeinse cijfers.

The 'Drommedaris' is the southern gateway of the city Enkhuizen. It is the best known building in Enkhuizen.
The building was erected as a defense work at the entrance to the Old Harbor, and was originally on the Westfriesian dike; this ran from the north; over the Breedstraat along to the Zuiderdijk. The stretch of dike near the Drommedaris was later excavated for the construction of the new haven. The artillery cellar and the room on the ground floor in the building date from 1540 and were the original building. Both rooms contain cannon holes along the walls in niches where there were cannons that could cover the harbors. The upper room has a rib vault. Above the building on the roof was a structure containing prison cells that can still be found on the first floor in the current building. So the bottom of the first floor was the roof of the original building. Above the gate is a cell for those condemned to death, in which oak wooded dates and sometimes poems are carved. Outside above the entrance to this gate, the weapon of the Emperor was carved out of white stone with the text below: "Blessed is the City and highly praised, who prays for war in times of peace." In a wooden bell chair on the roof a small bell hung to ring for announce of closing the gate.

The old name of the building is Zuiderpoort or Ketenpoort and later also Wilgenburg (for the stronghold to which the tower belonged). The name Ketenpoort refers to the salt works (zoutketen) south of the city along the Zuiderdijk, which could be reached via this gate. There seawater from the North sea was evaporated to obtain the salt where herring was preserved with. The name Drommedaris or Domburg was first used in the 19th century. 

The building was renovated to its present appearance after the Eighty Years' War with Spain. Construction lasted from 1649–1657. Over the centuries the building has been used to store gunpowder and house prisoners and guards. It also served as an excise office, spinning/weaving mill, and telegraph office (under the gate). The first Zuiderzee Museum exhibition was held in the building in the summer of 1949.

The building was seriously damaged in a bombing raid near the end of World War II. The gate on the city side was riddled with bomb fragments.

Around 1960, the Drommedaris housed a student center complete with a ground-floor bar. Students, including the Dutch Princess (later Queen Beatrix of Orange), slept in the prison cells in the attic. Later a café-restaurant was opened on the first floor. The space below, like the second floor, became a small auditorium that was used for concerts, theater performances, and art exhibits. Nowadays, the building is used only as a cultural center. There is an elevator to go upstairs for disabled people.

Restorations to the building were carried out in 1914–1915, 1956–1968, and 1973. The building and the carillon tower were restored from 2012–2015. The building reopened in the spring of 2015.
