SNCF 26152 @ Dormans 🇫🇷 - a photo on Flickriver

Woensdag 17 september 2025 stond bij mijn broer Steven en mij al een tijdje vetgedrukt in de kalender. Die dag zou namelijk onze volgende fotodag doorgaan.

Aanvankelijk hadden we het Rijndal als bestemming voorzien: een aantal laatste foto’s van de EC-treinen van en naar Zwitserland zouden zeker welkom zijn. Maar toen de weersverwachtingen concreter werden, bleek al snel dat we er niet konden rekenen op hetzelfde zonovergoten weer als tijdens onze septemberuitstap van 2024. Neen, deze keer zou het grijs worden, met kans op regen — dat zag er minder goed uit.

Het grijze weer bracht ons wel op een ander idee: nog eens het Venlose bos op het programma zetten. Dat is al talrijke keren geopperd, maar tot nu toe zijn we er nog nooit geraakt. En hoewel het officieel nog zomer was, waren de eerste herfstkleuren dit jaar door de droogte al opvallend vroeg zichtbaar in de bomen. Maar ook dat plan kon in de vuilnisbak toen duidelijk werd dat net die woensdag een regenzone de Lage Landen zou overspoelen…

Waarheen dan wel? Tijdens de vakantie van Steven naar Spanje had hij onderweg rond Reims gemerkt dat er behoorlijk wat te beleven viel langs de LGV Est en het zaadje was toen al geplant: het leek hem een mooie regio om ooit eens een aparte fotodag aan te wijden. En toen hij zondagmiddag 14 september de weersites raadpleegde, bleek het er ook qua weer goed uit te zien: tot acht uur zon (na een eerder bewolkte start) en temperaturen oplopend tot 25 graden. Dat klonk veelbelovend!

Zijn plan kreeg van mij meteen groen licht en in sneltreinvaart stak Steven een voorbereiding in elkaar, met ook enkele zij-uitstapmogelijkheden naar de lijnen van Charleville-Mézières, Laon, Châlons-en-Champagne en Épernay naar Reims. Zoals zo vaak werd het aantal voorspelde zonne-uren in de dagen nadien wel wat naar beneden bijgesteld, maar met vijf uren zon en een vrijwel heldere hemel in de avond bleef het absoluut de moeite waard. We besloten wel wat later dan gebruikelijk te vertrekken in Halle: acht uur stipt.

Na een vlotte rit via Charleroi en Couvin (als je tenminste de Chaussée Dégradée even wegdenkt) bereikten we iets voor tien uur Franse bodem. Daar hielden we eerst halt in Montigny-sur-Vence, voor een TGV en de aansluitende TER naar Sedan. De TGV zagen we enkel nog in de laatste honderd meter naar het fotopunt (verkeerde doorkomsttijd in gedachten gehouden), maar de TER passeerde precies op het moment dat de zon haar eerste verwoede pogingen deed om door het wolkendek te breken. Daarna trokken we door naar de omgeving van Reims, waar we afwisselend langs de hogesnelheidslijn en de diesellijn richting Châlons-en-Champagne postvatten. Dat zorgde voor de nodige variatie, en dat is altijd leuk.

De dag voor onze uitstap stuurde Steven me ook nog een foto door van Dormans in de Marne-vallei. Daar zouden in de avond twee met Corail-rijtuigen gesleepte TER-treinen vanuit Parijs rijden! En bovendien was Dormans ook nog niet eens zo gek ver rijden van Reims: slechts een half uurtje! Daar kwam ook nog bovenop dat de lijn vanuit Paris Est naar Strasbourg de hele dag gesloten was voor het treinverkeer (de reizigerstreinen werden door bussen vervangen) dus hadden we ook wel goede hoop dat er nog een of andere cargo zou rijden (en we hebben inderdaad twee cargo's gezien)!

Op naar Dormans dus! Aangekomen op het fotopunt volgde eerst wel een deceptie... de bomen langs de oever van de Marne waren gigantisch gegroeid en hoe zouden we hier tussen al het groen in hemelsnaam nog een trein op foto kunnen zetten. Maar mits wat positioneren op de brug over de Marne (tevens ook de grens tussen het departement Marne en Aisne) zou er toch nog iets mogelijk moeten zijn.

En of het mogelijk was, zien jullie op bovenstaande foto! We gokten trouwens dat de TER vanuit Paris geduwd werd (dat was ook zo bij de gesleepte TER een uurtje vroeger) en ja hoor, aan het einde van de sleep duwde SYBIC 26152 in de kleuren van Grand Est de TER inderdaad richting volgende stop in Dormans waar de Église Saint-Hippolyte het stadsbeeld beheerst.

En ook al zien jullie hier eigenlijk maar 1/5 van de complete trein, wij waren in elk geval heel blij met deze SYBIC in het warme avondlicht! En zoals jullie zien zat het weerbericht er niet naast, want de avond verliep vrijwel helder!

Wednesday, September 17, 2025, was marked in bold on the calendar for my brother Steven and me. It was our next photography day.

Initially, we planned to head to the Rhine Valley for some final shots of the EC trains to and from Switzerland. But as the weather forecast became clearer, it seemed we wouldn’t get the same sunny conditions as during our trip in September 2024. Gray skies and possible rain made us reconsider.

We briefly considered the Venlo forest, an idea often suggested but never realized. Although it was still officially summer, the first autumn colors were already visible this year due to the drought. However, a rain system over Belgium and the Netherlands forced us to abandon that plan.

So why not Reims? During Stevens trip to Spain earlier this year, he noticed quite some action along the LGV Est around Reims. That planted the idea of a future photography day there. Checking the weather on Sunday, September 14, showed promising conditions: up to eight hours of sun and temperatures reaching 25°C.

The plan was quickly set, including optional stops along the lines to Charleville-Mézières, Laon, Châlons-en-Champagne and Épernay. Although the predicted sun hours were later slightly reduced, five hours of sunshine and a mostly clear evening made the trip worthwhile. We left Halle a bit later than usual, at 8:00 a.m.

After a smooth drive via Charleroi and Couvin, we reached France just before 10:00 a.m. We stopped briefly at Montigny-sur-Vence, where a TGV passed by and the following TER to Sedan arrived. We only saw the TGV in the last 100 meters approaching the viewpoint, but the TER passed just as the sun made a visible effort to break through the clouds. Then we continued around Reims, alternating between the high-speed line and the diesel line to Châlons-en-Champagne, which added nice variety.

The day before our trip, Steven also sent me a photo of Dormans in the Marne Valley. Two TER trains hauled by Corail carriages were supposed to be running from Paris that evening! And what's more, Dormans wasn't even that far from Reims: only half an hour! On top of that, the line from Paris Est to Strasbourg was closed to rail traffic all day (passenger trains were replaced by buses), so we were quite hopeful that some kind of freight train would still be running (and we did indeed see two freight trains)!

So, off to Dormans! But arriving at the photo point was initially met with disappointment... the trees along the banks of the Marne had grown enormously, and how on earth could we possibly photograph a train amidst all that greenery? But with some positioning on the bridge over the Marne (which also marks the border between the Marne and Aisne departments), something should be possible.

And you can see in the photo above whether it was possible! Incidentally, we guessed the TER was being pushed from Paris (which was also the case with the tugged TER an hour earlier), and sure enough, at the end of the tug, SYBIC 26152, in Grand Est livery, was indeed pushing the TER towards its next stop in Dormans, where the Église Saint-Hippolyte dominates the cityscape.

And even though you only see a fifth of the entire train here, we were certainly delighted with this SYBIC in the warm evening light! And as you can see, the weather forecast was right, because the evening was almost clear!
