Loquacious Oblivious Rex ( 4 ) - a photo on Flickriver

Entered into the Kreative People Group's "Social Distortion" challenge.

Number 4 in the "Loquacious Oblivious Rex" series begun in 2017 but on the back burner since then. I recently felt that the time was right to return to the idea.

LOR's address the unbelievable amount of noise that we make as human beings talking. Not only out loud but our minds are veritable cacophonous maelstroms of inner verbalization as well. Many people, those that seem to have an endless, inexhaustible penchant for non-stop talking, are merely giving voice to everything that's going on in their heads. No filter, as they say.

While our ability to talk is supposed to be one of our great advantages over all the other animals on Earth, it's also our most serious disadvantage. We never apprehend reality directly. Instead we experience the world only very indirectly through the vast clouds of words and linear thinking that our technologies and societies seem designed to foster. Anything to keep us from the profound silence and simplicity that we "swim" in, like fish unaware of water.

As our unquestioning obsession with technology ramps up in a straight line, we become more and more divorced from nature, each other and even ourselves We fill our consciousnesses with clouds of words and concepts, obscuring the clear, infinite blue of the "sky" behind it all.

I started LOR 4 with a Pano-Sabotage photograph of a lake scene taken in Eastern Ontario in August, 2018. I then created several copies of that image and subjected them to photo manipulation processing to add colour and effects. I took 4 of those into Affinity and covered them with text and flattened them. Mirroring was next, keeping them all to rectilinear forms as opposed to my usual spherical stellations.

These were then built up in layers and placed in ways to build up the composition. Then the total image was flattened again and a copy of it was added as a framing edge behind. More text was added on top of this in varying sizes and placements. When all of that was complete I added the "drawing" or "looping" lines and the final "giant" text elements for compositional interest and depth. The original pano can be see on the bottom in realistic colour, blue sky and water, with green trees and bushes. A variation of it appears next to it in darker tones. It was about a 3-4 hour process.
