The Royal Grand Palace is a complex of buildings at the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. The palace has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam and later Thailand since 1782. It consists of not only royal and throne halls, but also a number of government offices as well as the renowned Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It covers an area of 218,000 square metres and is surrounded by four walls, 1900 metres in length. After King Rama I ascended to the throne in 1782, the palace was built. Fortunately, after the covid period, it is not yet busy with tourists. Thailand has just ended their quarantine policy. Face masks are no longer mandatory. Great to visit the Grand Palace one more time now. The Phra Ubosot, or ordination hall, occupies almost the entire southern part of the temple complex. The Ubosot is surrounded by a low wall; this separation emphasizes the sacred character of the building. The wall contains eight small pavilions with high spires, each with a double bai sema stone covered in gold leaf. In Thai religious architecture, such stones traditionally denote a sacred boundary within which the ordination of monks could be performed. Impressive 200 years of royal history and architecture at the Grand Palace in Bangkok with more than 100 buildings. The Royal Grand Palace has been the official residence of the kings of Siam. It is the city's biggest tourist attraction and a pilgrimage destination for devout Buddhists. Construction of the Ubosot began during the reign of Rama I in 1783; as such, the building is one of the oldest structures in the temple. The Ubosot was built to house the Buddha statue known as the Emerald Buddha, which the king captured in 1779 from Vientiane, Laos. The hall is surrounded by columns that support a massive roof. The roof is covered with blue, yellow and orange glazed tiles. The outer walls are covered with traditional Thai decorations of gold leaf and colored glass. Het bestaat niet alleen uit koninklijke en troonzalen, maar ook uit een aantal regeringsgebouwen en de beroemde Tempel van de groene Smaragd Boeddha. Aangenomen wordt dat die naam afkomstig is van het hindoe-woord Singh, dat op zijn beurt is afgeleid van het Sanskrietwoord Simha, wat leeuw betekent.
