Valencia is the third largest city in Spain. Valencia, like the entire region of Valencia, is officially bilingual; they speak both Spanish and Valencian. Valencian is very closely related to Catalan. Spanish Valencia is more than beach and paella.. Basílica del Sagrat Cor de Jesús or Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is located near the Silk Exchange - Lonja de la Seda and was built in the late 17th century over the ruins of the Roman Forum. It was demolished more than 200 years later in 1868 and in 1885 a new Baroque-style church was completed with a dome and a truly beautiful interior. The organ, measuring 12 x 8 meters, is one of the largest in Spain. Look to see if the doors are open when you walk by. The interior is beautiful and therefore must visit, if you are lucky enough to see it open. When the doors are closed it provides a quiet place for students to hang out.

Valencia ligt aan de Costa del Azahar aan de Middellandse Zee en geldt als geboorteplaats van de paella, een van de bekendste gerechten uit de Spaanse keuken. Valencia wordt ook wel de sinaasappelstad genoemd. Valencia is de derde economische motor van Spanje, na Madrid en Barcelona. Valencia werd gesticht in 138 v.Chr. onder de naam Valentia Edetanorum, door een Romeinse leider. Valencia heeft een mediterraan klimaat met warme zomers en zeer milde winters. Valencia is, net als de gehele regio Valencia, officieel tweetalig; men spreekt er zowel Spaans als Valenciaans. Het Valenciaans is zeer sterk verwant aan het Catalaans. Het Spaanse Valencia is meer dan strand en paella. Een bezoek aan Valencia is niet compleet zonder de markt te hebben betreden, een gigantisch gebouw in een modernistische stijl, waar alle verse producten rechtstreeks van de geïrrigeerde tuinbouwstreken van Valencia komen en waar u binnen het Middellandse Zeegebied kunt proeven en ruiken. Met andere woorden: veel bedrijvigheid en veel mediterraanse taferelen. De Mercado Central is een magische plek. Mis het niet! Basiliek van het Heilig Hart van Jezus bevindt zich vlakbij de zijdebeurs - Lonja de la Seda en werd eind 17e eeuw gebouwd over de ruïnes van het Romeinse forum. Het werd meer dan 200 jaar later, in 1868, afgebroken en in 1885 werd een nieuwe kerk in barokstijl voltooid met een koepel en een werkelijk prachtig interieur. Het orgel, van 12 x 8 meter, is één van de grootste in Spanje. Kijk naar binnen of de deuren open staan als je er langs loopt. Het interieur is prachtig en daarom is een bezoek een must, wanneer je het geluk hebt om het open te zien. Wanneer de deuren dicht zijn geeft het een rustig plekje voor studenten om te chillen.
