Montenegro is a country in Eastern Europe bordering Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania and the Adriatic Sea. It used to be a part of Yugoslavia. The capital is Podgorica. The name Montenegro is Italian and means Black mountain. Montenegro was an independent princedom between 1878 and 1910 and an independent kingdom until 1918. That year Montenegro became part of Yugoslavia. In 2003 Yugoslavia was transformed into the new country of Serbia and Montenegro, but this fell apart in 2006 when both countries went their separate ways. Montenegro is therefore the youngest country in Europe. Montenegro is not a member of the European Union, but it is a member of NATO. Despite the fact that Montenegro is not yet an EU Member State, people do pay with the euro. Montenegro may be small, but this beautiful nation has a huge array of natural and man-made wonders. Once overlooked in favor of more famous Mediterranean countries, Montenegro is quickly gaining a reputation as a great place to travel. It's easy to see why. The mountainous hinterland is home to deep gorges, flowing rivers, glacial lakes and old-growth forests, popular for adventure activities. Fort Gorazda was used by the Austrians during World War I, as they traded artillery shells with Montenegrin forces. It was originally constructed around 1884-1886. Although the turret guns are long gone, the fortress and all its glory still remain. The fortress was later used as a prison during the mid-20th century. Now, it sits completely abandoned on top of a mountain overlooking both the bay of Kotor and Tivat. It remains an amazing place to explore. The views are probably among the best in the entire region.

At first glance, Gorazda Fort does not seem particularly large. However, as you approach it, it becomes clear that this must have been one of the most important fortifications in Boka Bay. Fort Gorazda is a fortress built by the Austro-Hungarian Empire near Kotor in Montenegro. The current fort was built between 1884-1886 and replaced an earlier structure on the same site; its most notable feature is a 100-ton Gruson rotating tower on the roof, the last surviving example of its kind. The predecessor of the fortress was built before the 1869. The fortress was used by the Austrians during the First World War in artillery duels against Montenegrin batteries stationed on the Lovćen mountain. The Montenegrins were unable to destroy it. It was used as a depot by the Yugoslav army until the early 1990s. It was then abandoned and is quite overgrown, nature is taking it back. Overlooking the bays of Kotor and Tivat, Gorazda Fort is still a very interesting place to explore. There is no one manning the place so chances are you are the only one. You can explore the fortress inside and out. You can walk into the different rooms, down the stairs to the basement, even go up on the roof and see the huge rotating Gruson tower still in place. We had a great time exploring the ruins, although it was very dark and some places not always safe. As long as you are careful it is an exciting and fascinating experience.

Dat jaar werd Montenegro onderdeel van Joegoslavië. In 2003 werd Joegoslavië omgevormd in het nieuwe land Servië en Montenegro, maar dit viel in 2006 uit elkaar toen beide landen een eigen weg gingen. Montenegro is misschien klein, maar deze prachtige natie heeft een enorm scala aan natuurlijke en door de mens gemaakte wonderen. Ooit over het hoofd gezien ten gunste van meer bekende mediterrane landen, krijgt Montenegro snel een reputatie als een geweldige plek om te reizen. Het is gemakkelijk te zien waarom. Het bergachtige achterland herbergt diepe kloven, stromende rivieren, gletsjermeren en oerbossen, populair voor avontuurlijke activiteiten. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt Gorazda Fort niet bijzonder groot. Als je het echter nadert, wordt het duidelijk dat dit één van de belangrijkste vestingwerken in de Boka-baai moet zijn geweest. Fort Gorazda is een fort gebouwd door het Oostenrijks-Hongaarse rijk in de buurt van Kotor in Montenegro. Het werd vervolgens verlaten en is behoorlijk overgroeid. het ziet eruit dat de natuur het weer terug neemt. Met uitzicht op de baaien van Kotor en Tivat, is Fort Gorazda nog steeds een zeer interessante plek om te verkennen. Er is niemand die de plaats bemand, dus de kans is groot dat je de enige bent. Je kunt het fort van binnen en van buiten verkennen. Je kunt de verschillende kamers binnenlopen, de trap af naar de kelder, zelfs op het dak gaan en het enorme roterende Gruson torentje zien dat nog steeds op zijn plaats staat. We hebben een geweldige tijd gehad met het verkennen van de ruïnes, hoewel het erg donker was en sommige plekken niet altijd even veilig. Zolang je voorzichtig bent, is het een opwindende en fascinerende ervaring.
