Montenegro is a country in Eastern Europe bordering Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania and the Adriatic Sea. It used to be a part of Yugoslavia. The capital is Podgorica. The name Montenegro is Italian and means Black mountain. Montenegro was an independent princedom between 1878 and 1910 and an independent kingdom until 1918. That year Montenegro became part of Yugoslavia. In 2003 Yugoslavia was transformed into the new country of Serbia and Montenegro, but this fell apart in 2006 when both countries went their separate ways. Montenegro is therefore the youngest country in Europe. Montenegro is not a member of the European Union, but it is a member of NATO. Despite the fact that Montenegro is not yet an EU Member State, people do pay with the euro. Montenegro may be small, but this beautiful nation has a huge array of natural and man-made wonders. Once overlooked in favor of more famous Mediterranean countries, Montenegro is quickly gaining a reputation as a great place to travel. It's easy to see why. The mountainous hinterland is home to deep gorges, flowing rivers, glacial lakes and old-growth forests, popular for adventure activities. Crnojević River is a river close to the northeastern shores of Lake Skadar. The source of Rijeka Crnojevića is located 2.5 km southwest of the town of Rijeka Crnojevića, under the cave in the Obod Hill. Lake Skadar belongs to Albania and Montenegro, and is the largest lake in Southern Europe. The Montenegrin part of the lake and the surrounding land has been designated a national park, while the Albanian part is a nature reserve.

Lake Skadar National Park is protected by a national park on the Montenegrin side of an area of 400 square kilometers. It is the largest lake in Montenegro, the Balkans and one of the largest in Europe. Lovely to swim in. In the national park there are some small beaches where you can relax. It is also internationally recognized and its swamps are of international importance. The lake is also known as one of Europe's best bird sanctuary. It is a wonderfully beautiful area with steep mountains, clear water and floating meadows with water lilies. 48 species of fish have been counted in the lake. The best known is the carp, but because the lake is connected to the sea via the Bojana River, there are also sea fish. We also regularly encounter Hermann's tortoises. Early in the morning, the animals leave their nocturnal shelters, which are usually cavities protected by thick bushes or hedges, to bask in the sun and warm their bodies. A part of the border with neighboring Albania also runs right through the lake. According to old stories, the lake was created by the tears of a magic goddess. That may not be true, but after seeing the beautiful Skadar Lake, you may find that you also start to believe in these old stories.

De naam Montenegro is Italiaans en betekent Zwarte berg. Montenegro was tussen 1878 en 1910 een zelfstandig prinsdom en tot 1918 een zelfstandig koninkrijk. Dat jaar werd Montenegro onderdeel van Joegoslavië. In 2003 werd Joegoslavië omgevormd in het nieuwe land Servië en Montenegro, maar dit viel in 2006 uit elkaar toen beide landen een eigen weg gingen. Montenegro is misschien klein, maar deze prachtige natie heeft een enorm scala aan natuurlijke en door de mens gemaakte wonderen. Ooit over het hoofd gezien ten gunste van meer bekende mediterrane landen, krijgt Montenegro snel een reputatie als een geweldige plek om te reizen. Het is gemakkelijk te zien waarom. Het bergachtige achterland herbergt diepe kloven, stromende rivieren, gletsjermeren en oerbossen, populair voor avontuurlijke activiteiten. Nationaal park Lake Skadar wordt aan de aan de Montenegrijnse kant een gebied van 400 vierkante kilometer beschermd door een nationaal park. Het is het grootste meer van Montenegro, van de Balkan en één van de grootste van Europa. Heerlijk om in te zwemmen. In het nationale park zijn er enkele kleine stranden waar het goed toeven is. Het is ook internationaal erkend en de moerassen zijn van internationaal belang. Het meer staat ook bekend als één van Europa's beste vogelreservaat. Het is een heerlijk mooi gebied met steile bergen, helder water en drijvende weiden met waterlelies. In het meer zijn 48 vissoorten geteld. De bekendste is de karper, maar doordat het meer via de Bojana rivier met de zee verbonden is komen er ook zeevissen voor. We komen ook regelmatig Hermann's schildpadden tegen. Vroeg in de ochtend verlaten de dieren hun nachtelijke schuilplaatsen, die meestal holtes zijn die worden beschermd door dikke struiken of heggen, om in de zon te zonnebaden en hun lichaam te verwarmen. Dwars door het meer loopt ook een deel van de grens met buurland Albanië. Volgens oude verhalen is het meer ontstaan door de tranen van een elfje. Dat is misschien niet waar, maar na het zien van het mooie Skadar meer, merk je misschien dat je ook in ook in deze oude verhalen gaat geloven. Er zijn ook boottochten op de rivier en het meer, ideaal om zo kennis te maken met de schoonheden van het Nationaal Park Skadarmeer.
