The Greek Daedalus overlooking the ancient and modern Pompeii

Pompei is a city and commune in the Metropolitan City of Naples in Italy, home of the ancient Roman ruins part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city is mainly famous for the ruins of the ancient city of Pompeii. Pompeii city and its people was buried under 4 to 6 m of volcanic ash and pumice in the big eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The first stable settlements on the site date back to the 8th century BC. In Roman times it was a flourishing city with about 12,000 inhabitants. A big statue of Daedalus placed between the ruins was donated to Pompeii. The artwork of the late Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj. I found very inspiring and very fitting in this environment. After the death of the artist it is bound to stay in Pompeii and one can only wish that this artwork will be conserved diligently. In Greek mythology, Daedalus was a skillful architect, craftsman and artist, and was seen as a symbol of wisdom, knowledge, and power. He invented and built the Labyrinth that he could barely escape it after he built it. Modern Pompei was founded in 1891 after the building of the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompei.

Pompei city is mainly famous for the ruins of the ancient city of Pompeii. The vast archeological area is under the Unesco protection and attracts tourists from all around the world. A big statue of Daedalus, placed near the temple of Venus between the ruins, was donated to Pompeii. It is the artwork of the late Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj. The Temple of Venus -on a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the plain- was built soon after the establishment of Pompeii as a Roman colony. The Goddess of beauty was worshipped in Pompeii. As for many buildings in Pompeii, this temple was restored after 62 AD. Very few elements are left, of the immense splendor of the temple: an altar and two bases of statues

Pompei is een stad en gemeente in de metropool Napels in Italië, de thuisbasis van de oude Romeinse ruïnes die op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staan. De stad staat vooral bekend om de ruïnes van de oude stad Pompeï. De stad Pompeii en haar inwoners werden begraven onder 4 tot 6 m vulkanische as en puimsteen tijdens de grote uitbarsting van de Vesuvius in 79 na Christus. De eerste nederzettingen op de site dateren uit de 8e eeuw voor Christus. In de Romeinse tijd was het een bloeiende stad met ongeveer 12.000 inwoners. Een groot standbeeld van Daedalus bij de tempel van Venus tussen de ruïnes werd geschonken aan Pompeii. Het kunstwerk van de overleden Poolse beeldhouwer Igor Mitoraj vind ik heel inspirerend en heel passend in deze omgeving. Na de dood van de kunstenaar blijft het ongetwijfeld in Pompeii en men kan alleen maar wensen dat dit kunstwerk ijverig wordt bewaard. In de Griekse mythologie was Daedalus een bekwame architect, vakman en kunstenaar en werd hij gezien als een symbool van wijsheid, kennis en macht. Hij bedacht en bouwde het Labyrinth . Nadat hij het had gebouwd kon hij er nauwelijks zelf uit ontsnappen. De Tempel van Venus - met een panoramisch uitzicht over de vlakte - werd gebouwd kort na de oprichting van Pompeii als Romeinse kolonie. De godin van schoonheid werd aanbeden in Pompeii. Zoals voor veel gebouwen in Pompeii, werd deze tempel na 62 na Christus gerestaureerd. Er zijn nog maar weinig elementen over van de immense tempel: een altaar en twee standbeelden. Het moderne Pompei werd in 1891 opgericht na de bouw van het heiligdom van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Pompei.
