"Hey Gannet, it's time to dive for fish"

Helgoland is a German island in the North Sea. In the past, the island has been part of Denmark and the United Kingdom, but since 1890 it has been German property. It is considerably further away from the coast than the East Frisian Islands. Strangely enough, it is not part of the customs territory of the European Community. On Helgoland, Halunder freesk is spoken, a North Frisian language. The main island, with the recognizable cliff of Trias fur sandstone, which is subdivided into Oberland and Unterland. The small island of Düne is mainly covered with sand and popular with nudists. There is an airport on Düne and there are two bungalow parks. Helgoland is traffic-free: there are only a few cars, and cycling is prohibited. There is a small bus that makes a tour around the island. There are also some electric vehicles that serve as vans. Helgoland can be reached by high-speed catamaran, ferry or by small propeller plane. The island enjoys considerable fame among nature and especially bird lovers because it is an important breeding ground and stopping place for sea birds from the North Sea region and for migratory birds. The Northern Gannet is a seabird living at the coasts of the North Sea. Colonies are mostly located on offshore islands with cliffs, from which the birds can more easily launch into the air. Gannets breed here on the cliffs of Helgoland in the summer. The birds overwinter at sea and are known to follow ships. They dive for fish in a spectacular way and can do that at a speed of 100 km/hour if they drop.

The unique island Helgoland in the North Sea has great flora and fauna for nature lovers. The most preferred way of strolling around the island is by walking. At the northern end of the Oberland you can see "Lange Anna" a landmark of Helgoland. Lange Anna is a tall 47 metres high sea stack of Buntsandstein. Its real local name is Nathurn Stak. Climbing the stack is not allowed but tourists may view the rock from a distance. Northern Gannets started breeding on the German island Helgoland about 25 years ago. The colony, nowadays holding about 700 breeding pairs, birds annually die on the nest. Gannets build their nests on steep cliff faces. They used seaweed to construct the nest. Northern gannets exhibit many types of aggressive behavior while they are nesting. Confrontations normally only take place between birds of the same sex. A female will not react if a male approaches a nest but it will react fiercely if another female approaches. The fights between males occupying nests for the first time are particularly intense. Such fights can last for up to two hours and may lead to serious injuries. Birds lunge at each other and lock bills, wrestling for extended periods while neighbors peck at them. This shot was taken during the breeding season at the Breithorn rock.

Helgoland is een Duits eiland in de Noordzee. In het verleden is het eiland onderdeel geweest van Denemarken en van het Verenigd Koninkrijk, maar sinds 1890 is het Duits grondbezit. Het ligt aanzienlijk verder uit de kust dan de Oost-Friese Waddeneilanden, waar het niet toe gerekend wordt. Het hoofdeiland, met de herkenbare klif van Trias bontzandsteen, dat is onderverdeeld in Oberland en Unterland. Helgoland is te bereiken per high-speed catamaran, veerboot of per kleine propeller vliegtuig. Aan de noordkant van het Oberland zie je Lange Anna, een herkenningspunt van Helgoland. Lange Anna is een lange 47 meter hoge rots (nu door omvallen bedreigde) van bontzandsteen. De echte lokale naam is Nathurn Stak. Het beklimmen van de rotspunt is niet toegestaan, maar toeristen kunnen de rots van een afstand bekijken. Het eiland geniet aanzienlijke faam bij natuur- en vooral vogelliefhebbers omdat het een belangrijke broed- en pleisterplaats is voor zeevogels uit het Noordzeegebied en voor trekvogels. De Jan-van-gent is een zeevogel met een groot verspreidingsgebied in de Noordzee. De naam van deze vogel heeft niets met de naam van de persoon Jan van Gent te maken. Het woord gent is verklaarbaar en herkenbaar voor een mannelijke watervogel zoals een gans. Mogelijk heeft het ook te maken met de Nederlands gewoonte om in uitdrukkingen de naam Jan te plaatsen zoals "Jan en alleman", vandaar jan-van-gent. Jan-van-genten broeden in de zomer op klippen op rotsige eilanden zoals Helgoland. Jan-van-gent vogels vertonen veel soorten van agressief gedrag terwijl ze nestelen. Confrontaties vinden normaal gesproken alleen plaats tussen vogels van hetzelfde geslacht. Een vrouwtje zal niet reageren als een mannetje een nest nadert, maar het zal fel reageren als een ander vrouwtje nadert. De gevechten tussen mannen die voor het eerst nesten bezetten, zijn bijzonder intens. Dergelijke gevechten kunnen tot twee uur duren en kunnen leiden tot ernstig letsel. Vogels vallen naar elkaar uit en worstelen langdurig terwijl buren naar hen pikken. De vogels overwinteren op zee en staan erom bekend dat ze schepen volgen. Ze maken dan lange tochten tot in de Middellandse Zee. Ze duiken op spectaculaire wijze naar vis en kunnen dat met een snelheid van 100 km/uur als ze zich laten vallen.
