A trip to Kiev might not be very obvious, but the capital of Ukraine will surprise you in many ways. In the center you will find stately houses and beautiful cathedrals, attractive alleys and large squares with trendy restaurants. A city with an impressive history where so much can be seen. Kiev arose on the river Dnieper, on the trade route to the Greeks. Kiev experienced its heyday between around 900, when it was the capital of the East Slavic Empire. For the next six centuries, Kiev was no more than a provincial town in the Russian Empire. It was not until 1991 that Ukraine became independent of the Soviet Union. The Kiev Pechersk Lavra was founded in 1051 in the hills near Kiev by the monks Antonius and Theodosius. The monastery was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery is called lavra, indicating that it is one of the four most important religious centers of the Russian Orthodox Church. The walled monastery complex is built on the right bank of the Dnieper River and comprises an upper part and a lower part. Both parts contain an underground corridor system where monastic life began and a multitude of churches, convent buildings and museums. The striking 96.5 meter high clock tower from 1745 is visible from afar. The underground corridors consist of narrow corridors 1.5 meters wide and chapels and prayer rooms. The corridors also serve as a burial place for the monks. In view of the constant low temperature, these do not dissolve (a kind of mummification process) in which very old people look like they were buried yesterday. A part is open for viewing. The Ukrainian word Petjery means caves.

Kiev is the hidden jewel of Eastern Europe and fast becoming the coolest capital city in Europe. Geographically, Kiev sits at the centre of Europe. In reality it feels like an entirely different world. Kiev is an ancient city where old meets new and East meets West. Kiev Pechersk Lavra also known as the Kyiv Monastery of the Caves, is a historic Orthodox Christian monastery founded in 1051. Today it is named one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine. Een trip naar Kiev ligt misschien niet heel erg voor de hand, maar de hoofdstad van de Oekraïne zal je op vele vlakken verbazen. In het centrum vind je statige huizen en prachtige kathedralen, sfeervolle steegjes en grote pleinen met hippe restaurants. Een stad met een indrukwekkende historie waar zoveel is te zien. Kiev ontstond aan de rivier de Dnjepr, aan de handelsroute naar de Grieken. Kiev beleefde zijn bloeitijd tussen rond 900, toen het de hoofdstad van het Oost-Slavische Rijk was. De volgende zes eeuwen was Kiev niet meer dan een provinciestad in het Russische Rijk. Pas in 1991 werd Oekraïne zelfstandig van Sovjet-Unie. Het Holenklooster van Kiev werd in 1051 in de heuvels bij Kiev gesticht door de monniken Antonius en Theodosius. In 1990 werd het klooster tot Werelderfgoed uitgeroepen. Het klooster draagt de titel lavra, wat aangeeft dat het een van de vier belangrijkste religieuze centra van de Russisch-Orthodoxe Kerk is. Het ommuurde kloostercomplex is gebouwd op de rechteroever van de Dnjepr en omvat een bovendeel en een benedendeel. Beide delen bevatten een ondergronds gangenstelsel waar het kloosterleven begon en een veelvoud aan kerken, kloostergebouwen en musea. De opvallende 96,5 meter hoge klokkentoren uit 1745 is van verre zichtbaar. De ondergrondse gangenstelsels bestaan uit smalle gangen 1,5 meter breed en kapellen en gebedsruimtes. De gangen dienen ook als begraafplaats voor de monniken. Gezien de constante lage temperatuur gaan deze niet over tot ontbinding (een soort mummificatieproces) waarbij zeer oude overledenen eruitzien als waren ze gisteren begraven.
