Top of the Mornin'

            It's become a tradition for me to spend MLK Day somewhere within a days drive of home getting caught up on a little photography. When things come together it can be the first railfanning chance I get in a new year complete with winter light and crisp air. It does have to win out over sleeping in and staying warm. Such was my own debate a day ahead of time but the forecast of a clear dome sky was motivation. 

Once I decided to go I had to decide where to go. A one hour radius has put me anywhere from the Upper Mississippi around Red Wing, St. Croix Valley, Twin Cities, Eau Claire or the CN Barron Sub. With light snow and sub zero temps I wanted no part of the Twin Cities freeways as I weighed my options. With CN running through the yard (in the dark) it's hardly an exotic target but became a contender the more I thought about it. Given the cloudy future of some sand companies and the age of the SD60s I decided to make the Barron Sub the first target. 

I got an early start but the condition of the highways ranged from sketchy to atrocious. The idea is usually to be in Ladysmith by 08:00, I knew that wouldn't be in the cards pretty early on. For some reason ATCS seemed to be offline in the Ladysmith area so I couldn't tell if L520 was getting on the Superior Sub yet or not. I just kept rolling east on Hwy 8 and a mile before reaching Weyerhaeuser the scanner came to life. CN 5409 east was getting a warrant to take off from Weyerhaeuser, boom! I was in business. The right train in right place at the right time. CN 5409 and CN 5463 ease out of the siding at Weyerhaeuser with 65 cars. Barely visible over the rear of the train is the signal for the radio controlled power switch at East Weyerhaeuser. 8:30 am and I was pretty happy with my choice. January 20, 2020.
