Cet insecte particulier, à mi-chemin entre le papillon et la libellule, est assez grand, puisqu’il possède une envergure allant de 45 à 55 mm. La tête, le thorax et l’abdomen sont robustes et très poilus ; ce dernier est totalement noir et est terminé chez le mâle de cerques formant des crochets (ils servent à saisir les femelles en vol). Les ailes sont vivement colorées et sont d’un beau jaune très vif (voire fluo). Les ailes postérieures sont triangulaires et possèdent une tache noire qui s’étire tout le long de l’abdomen (elle atteint l’angle inférieur de l’aile). Les antennes sont très longues et terminées par un petit renflement que l’on appelle « bouton ».

This particular insect, halfway between the butterfly and the dragonfly, is large enough, since it has a wingspan of 45 to 55 mm. The head, thorax and abdomen are robust and very hairy; it is totally black and is finished in male tails forming hooks (they used to enter flight in females). The wings are brightly colored and have a very bright beautiful yellow (or fluorescent). The hind wings are triangular and have a black spot that stretches all along the abdomen (it reaches the bottom edge of the wing). The antennas are very long and ended with a small bulge is called "button".
