Who went here?

            Although human visitors are strictly prohibited from stepping off the boardwalks in Yellowstone's thermal areas, there's nothing to stop wildlife from doing so. Here are prominent traces of bison that moved across the delicate biome thriving on top of the runoff channels of Yellowstone's iconic Grand Prismatic Spring.
Here the spring gently overflows its rim, allowing the hot water that emerges to cool enough for the bright orange extremophile cyanobacterium Phormidium to flourish. Other bacteria, archaea, viruses and algae also bloom in the shallow runoff and dissolved minerals precipitate, resulting in the wide  variety of colors and textures seen here.
