            Louis Breguet started his flying experiences with designing and building helicopters. But he  soon realized - just as Igor Sikorsky - that it was way  too early given the  available techjnology  of the time to reach successful flight with a helicopter.

On this decision he started in 1909 with the design of a heavier-than-air aeroplane  (Type I) which flew successfully  but  could be  improved.  This improved design (Type II) we see here  in flight over the airfield La Brayelle near Douai. 

In the pilot seat is Louis Breguet himself (!) here flying in the  beginning of 1910 over the airfield La Brayelle near Douai.

Due to a light construction and low air resistance the Type II could reach 70 km/hr speeds with a Renault engine rated at  50 hp. The air resistance was reduced by the use of one interplane strut connecting the wings on each side. Breguet coined the phrase 'double monoplan' (double monoplane) for this construction. Halfway on each strut was an aileron. 

As  an engineer Breguet saw ways to improve his design so he came up with the Type III.

About the flying  height, I estimate this from other photos from the same flight at ca. 10 meter.
