Königsberg Cathedral_056 - a photo on Flickriver

            The bookmark of the cathedral dates back to 1333. The construction of the cathedral was started by Bishop Johannes Clara, who in 1327 began building a walled bishop's courtyard on the eastern half of Kneiphof, to which a covered gallery and a shelter were added later in the southern part.
By 1351, the cathedral was covered with a roof, and according to the decision of the Grand Master Winrich von Kniprode, its reconstruction began immediately, which lasted until 1382.  Since 1558, all the professors standing in front of the university had the right to be buried in an open gallery along the northern wall of the choir. Immanuel Kant was the last in 1804 to find peace by the walls of the Cathedral.
In August 1944, a British air raid and a subsequent fire turned the once picturesque Kneiphof Island and the Cathedral into ruins. New reconstruction began in 1990 and continues to this day.

К 1380 году строительство основного здания завершилось, но работы по отделке продолжались и позднее. Три огромных нефа, массивные готические своды, две строгие башни на западном фасаде, резной деревянный алтарь — архитектурой и украшением собора жители Кёнигсберга гордились по праву. 
В XIX веке собор переживал непростые времена. В 1807 году, когда Кёнигсберг оккупировали наполеоновские войска, храм превратился в тюрьму, а чуть позднее — в госпиталь. К счастью, этот период продлился недолго, и собор сумел вернуться к привычной жизни. А в 1880 году в память о великом немецком философе Иммануиле Канте к зданию была пристроена часовня, куда перезахоронили останки ученого.
В августе 1944 года налет английской авиации и последовавший за ним пожар превратили некогда живописный остров Кнайпхоф и Кафедральный собор в руины.
В 1990-ых годах началось масштабная реконструкция храма. Над восстановлением трудились историки и краеведы, строители и инженеры,  изучались архивы и старинные фотографии. Была проделана гигантская работа, чтобы собор получил путевку в новую жизнь, а калининградцы – прекрасный концертный зал и музей.
