            Zadonsk is a the unique city in the Lipetsk region with three active monasteries, from the XVIII century and to this day it is considered an important orthodox center of Russia («the Russian Jerusalem»). Zadonsk, a historical city, appeared in the first half of the XVII century, and was closely connected with the Zadonsky Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The submonastic settlement gave rise to formation of the city. Throughout all its history the monastery influenced the formation of spiritual, cultural and material resources of the city. In the XIX century the popularity of a monastery reached the incredible sizes (it was connected with the canonization of prelate Tikhon), at this time the city grew and developed as a pilgrimage center, and service of pilgrims made the main income of the population. Today, when the monastery revived after the Soviet period, its role as spiritual and educational center increased even more. Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is engaged in social and spiritual and educational activity, helps the restoration of churches of the area. Zadonsk becomes again the pilgrimage center.

Богородицкий мужской монастырь, именуемый ныне Рождество-Богородицкий, основан двумя старцами-схимонахами, Кириллом и Герасимом, выходцами из московского Сретенского монастыря, принёсшими около 1620 года копию Владимирской иконы Богоматери, впоследствии прославившуюся как чудотворная. Первый деревянный храм во имя Сретенья Владимирской иконы Богоматери монахи основали на берегу реки Тешевки при слиянии с Доном. В 1779 году крестьянская слобода Тешевка была переназвана Задонском, а вслед за этим был переименован и монастырь.
1769 г. стал важнейшим в истории святилища: в это место перебрался святитель Тихон. Он проживал в храме вплоть до 1783 г., а в возрасте 59 лет он скончался. После его смерти началось паломничество к его гробнице. Когда в 1846 г. решили перестроить здания обнаружили, что мощи святого не тронул тлен, но лишь в 1860 г. наконец случилось его прославление. По этому событию в город приехали три сотни тысяч православных. Это в сорок раз больше населения самого Задонска. Возле гробницы тогда случалось большое количество прекрасных исцелений. 
В начале XX столетия жизнь здесь протекала без потрясений. Но когда случилась революция, начались страшные события: в 1919 году был вскрыт гроб с мощами святого Тихона, а служителей изгнали из богомольни. От прежнего собора ничего не сохранилось, а мощи святого были отправлены сначала в краеведческий музей, потом на Елецкую землю, и в конце концов перед войной они оказались в Орле.
За шесть десятков лет здание изменилось донельзя. За эти годы здесь располагалось множество мирских учреждений: фабрика по сушке овощей, колбасный цех и детский дом. Восстановление главного собора началось в 88 г. XX века. 1991 год — важный в истории святилища. Пять человек постригли в монахи. В последний месяц лета священные мощи Тихона снова оказались в Задонском монастыре.
Собор восстанавливался очень быстро. Первой была построена 80-метровая колокольня. Зазолотились купола главного собора. Был восстановлен храм в честь святого Тихона. Здесь стали писать лики святых, украшающие в настоящее время Владимирский храм.
В 1998 г. свершилось важнейшее мероприятие. Алексией II нанес патриарший визит. Богослужители получили благословенное напутствие.
