OK - THIS IS IT.... for this year's, my Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead series......
I'm All Flickered-and-DayOfTheDead out - and You probably since a while already ((((:

SUGAR SKULLS for You All - choose yours (((;
a very creative, different kind of Altar display in a shop window i saw last night on may way home from the celebrations in Ajijc's Plaza !! these sugar skulls are a traditional part of any Mexican altar, they mostly are decorated with colorful sugar designs... and names of living family members and friends.

" Dia de los Muertos"

The Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico are a wonderful tradition of blended cultures, folklore and religion, they can be traced back to the indigenous Olmec, Zapotec, Mixtec, Aztec, Maya, P'urhépecha, and Totonac. These rituals celebrating the deaths of ancestors have been observed by these civilizations perhaps for as long as 2500–3000 years. In the pre-Hispanic era, it was common to keep skulls as trophies and display them during the rituals to symbolize death and rebirth.

Plans for this day are made throughout the year, including gathering the goods to be offered to the dead on altars built in family homes. During the two-day period, families usually also clean and decorate graves. Most visit the cemeteries where their loved ones are buried, bringing offerings of food and flowers to their graves.

Those with a distinctive talent for writing sometimes create short poems, called "calaveras" ("skulls"); rhymes mocking their living friends, contemporary politicians or other well known personalities, describing their interesting habits and attitudes or funny anecdotes. A Flickr friend of mine, @Alarife, did a beautiful calavera poem for me, my first one ever and I felt honored (((:

All in all, I think this colorful and whimsical tradition of celebrating our dead does help our attitude towards Death, while at the same time it celebrates Life… a wonderful custom to adopt.
