Eastbound MNA Manifest Train at Independence, MO

            A pair of EMD veterans hailing from the Rio Grande and CNW bring MNA Train KCMNA 27 up Independence Hill on Main Track 2 of the UP Sedalia Sub. with 33 loads, 32 empties, 5,112 tons and 4,013 feet. The lead unit was once known as DRGW 5392, and the second unit was built at CNW 907.

They're running just ahead of the Missouri River Runner, Amtrak 316 will come up next to them on Main 1 and the MNA Local will hold at Independence Jct. for them to get ahead east on the single track before following them to Pleasant Hill.

The entire hill is a compensated 1.4% that runs roughly 6 miles bottom to top, but the steepest climb contained in that is just to the west of the depot with roughly a mile of 1.3%, which this train is entirely within here. Around 5,000 tons is about all you can make the hill with only having 2 engines, so they're down to about 9 MPH at this point clawing the rail in notch 8 with sand dust flying.

It doesn't matter how many times I see this spectacle--it never gets old.
