[The set on the B. F. Brown House contains 6 images] The B. F. Brown House, a 1 1/2-story frame structure, was built in 1875 and is located in the Kingston Village Historic District in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. At heart, the home is Second Empire style with the typical mansard roof and the numerous dormer windows. The building, however, includes elements of the Italianate especially in the narrow windows. In addition a touch of Queen Anne appears in the small tower extending upward from the bay window (on the left side as one faces the house). Rich in color and embellishments, the structure is firmly in the Victorian architectural period. The roof is shingled with fish-scale pattern divided into sections of blue and red separated by bands of cream-colored shingling. The numerous dormer windows are very narrow with Gothic hoods. The tower is not tall (images 4 and 5 in this set); details of the dormers can be seen in the 6th photo in this series. Below the roof are panels (cream with red frames) of varying sizes which help group the ornamental brackets. The lower floor has 2 porches, one in front and another at the back, which only allowed a glimpse of a portion of the rear. Ornamental scrollwork is visible on the front (image 3). There are two front entrances; I don't know if both are original. My understanding is that the building has been converted into apartments. The foundation seems to be stone. The house has a basement, the outside entrance on the right side of the structure as one faces the home. I wanted to spend more time in this community, but it was an especially bad day for my knees. As part of the Kingston Village Historic District, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 1, 1974 with ID number 74000011.
