Wartenburg Pinwheel corona - a photo on Flickriver

This is a Wartenberg pinwheel charged to a very high voltage by an industrial power source. Under these conditions, sharp points exhibit corona discharge into the air, with violet light streaming away from the pins. At a guess I'd say that the voltage was 30-50kV.

It's more beautiful than a camera can capture because SRGB cannot reproduce the actual colours. I used a full-spectrum Fujifilm IS PRO to reveal more of the violet and ultraviolet than a normal camera, but what you see here is only an approximation.

I've been meaning to make an image like this for years...
