Kellogg Tunnel of the Bunker Hill Mine

            Grubstaking, a practice whereby someone with a little extra money invested in a prospector, was common in the early days of the world's largest silver mining region. The usual arrangement was that the grubstaker would provide a prospector with a burro and a month's provisions in exchange for an agreement to share in any mineral wealth discovered. Merchants in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District "grubstaked" Noah S. Kellogg when he set out to look for gold up the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River in August of 1885.

Though Kellogg did not find a substantial portion of gold, he discovered what would become the third most productive silver mine in the country, the famous Bunker Hill Mine of the Silver Valley of Idaho. 

In the early days of Kellogg's discovery, ore from the mine was shipped all the way to Selby, in the Bay Area of California, where the massive selby smelter (now demolished) resided. Later, the world's largest smelter was built at the foot of the hill near the Bunker Hill Mine. There it continuously operated for almost a century, churning out lead, silver, and zinc. To transport ore to the new mill, an aerial tramway with a horizontal length of 10,000 feet was constructed. 

Even the tramway was insufficient to transport the enormous amount of ore pouring out of the underground Bunker Hill Mine. The Kellogg Tunnel was completed in 1902 to solve that quandary. To this day, the mine remains closed and located at the center of what is the second largest superfund site in the U.S. Children in nearby Wardner and Smelterville had the highest recorded lead levels in their blood ever recorded to that date. The Trump Administration sought to reopen the mines to production, but they remain closed to this day.
