Variable Checkerspot butterfly on Canyon Sunflower

Here is another Variable Checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona) butterfly on a new composite flower of Canyon Sunflower (Venegasia carpesioides, Asteraceae) in the woods today. There were half a dozen of these butterflies working the flowers in this place today. I've been saying that they might not have a great year because of a poor showing last year, but it was encouraging to see so many of them today. It's also nice to see so many stages of these butterflies right now - caterpillars and chrysalis. Now I need a new shot of one ovipositing - like this photo from last summer. There was a breeze again this morning. I finally looked up and saw fog starting to spill over the mountains driven by steady fog winds from the south. The fog never settled in, mostly dissipating as it came over the mountain pass above us, but it did keep things cool today, only in the mid-70s. I got home from my walk around 1:30 - and surprise, our power was back on early after our maintenance power outage today. Thanks.
