Labyrinth Spider in its retreat on Sacapellote

This is the composite web of a Labyrinth Spider (genus Metepeira, Araneidae) with its retreat on the left and its proper orb web on the right. The retreat of this spider is remarkable - like a silk sack that's maybe three inches long. The spider is actually sticking its legs out at the bottom, holding the special strand of webbing that connects to its orb web, see this photo. The orb web itself seems damaged, and I hope I didn't do it. This spider web is in a plant of native Sacapellote (Acourtia microcephala) in the Asteraceae plant family. It's an unusual perennial composite with an interesting common name that has heads of pretty two-lipped mint-like flowers that are unlike any other composite I know. They deserve their own photo.
