R02090. Departing from Camaret-sur-Mer.

            R2090.  Departing from Camaret-sur-Mer on the metre gauge Réseau Breton.  

The Réseau Breton was an extensive railway system with lines radiating all over western Brittany in France but, sadly, it all came to an end when the whole narrow gauge system was closed down in 1967.  I'm therefore very glad that I managed to visit the area in 1964.  

The fishing port and seaside resort of Camaret-sur-Mer was situated on the line from Châteaulin-Embranchement (Châteaulin Junction) and, being a terminal station, it also had a locomotive depot.  

By the time of my visit, most of the passenger trains were worked by diesel railcars, but steam still held sway on the freight workings.   Most of the goods trains were actually mixed trains as they had a passenger carriage / brake van at the rear and one has been added to a rake of covered goods vans.  I took this shot standing on the rear balcony of the passenger carriage at the rear of the morning goods / mixed train as it departed from Camaret-sur-Mer in October, 1964.  

The locomotive at the front of the train was one of the 4-6-0Ts that were a feature of the Réseau Breton.
