These are wooden beam trawlers, with masts that were largely used as cranes for winching nets. They did use what was called a "mizzen sail," which was for helping to steady the boat when its nets were out.

Formerly Smith and Rhuland Shipyard, Scotia Trawler is the same shipyard that built the famous "Bluenose" and "Bluenose II" schooners. It's the Bluenose that appears on the Canadian 10 cent coin.

Also built here were replicas of "The Bounty," for the 1962 MGM movie "Mutiny on the Bounty," with Marlon Brando - which was nominated for 7 Academy Awards, and the HMS Surprise for the movie Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, with Russell Crowe.

Renamed "Surprise," the vessel is now a part of California's Maritime Museum of San Diego as a dockside attraction.
