Antler Moth - a photo on Flickriver

Antler Moth

            I see Antler Moths every year on the moors as they fly by day as well as night.  They rarely settle and are usually difficult to find and photograph but this year I have found several settled.  I thought this one looked good against the blooming heather, which was on the Peak District moors near Holmfirth. Antler Moths are so named because of that pale mark down the wing that looks just like the Antler of a Roebuck.  Its caterpillars feed on various grasses (eg Sheep's Fescue, Mat Grass  and Purple Moor Grass on the moors).  Its scientific name is Cerapteryx graminis; Cerapteryx means horn-wing, from the antler-like marking, and graminis means grass, from the caterpillar's foodplant.   And incidentally, have you ever wondered where the word antler originated? It is an old word that has been in use since the fourteenth century.  Prior to that each individual tine (ie point on an antler) used to have a name and the large one that sticks out the front was anteoculare (before the eye in Latin).  But it came to us via the Old French word antouillier (ant meaning before, and oeil meaning eye).  So the whole antler was named after the single forward pointing tine.   Red and Fallow Deer have the anteoculare tine, though Roe Deer don't, yet it is Roe Deer that the Antler Moth's markings most resemble.
