Roseate Tern - a photo on Flickriver

Roseate Tern

            Bearing in mind that terns usually fly over your head it is quite unusual to be able to photograph one in flight from above.  And especially if it is a Roseate Tern, Europe's rarest breeding seabird.  This one shows the diagnostic wing pattern of a narrow dark wedge formed by the outer four primaries, contrasting with the very pale upperparts.  You can also see the black bill tip, which is far more extensive than that on a Common Tern.  The long tail is also evident, which at rest extends way beyond the wings.  I managed to capture it calling too, a disyllabic "chu-wit", which is quite unlike other terns but not dissimilar to a Spotted Redshank.  Fewer than 150 pairs breed in Britain, with the vast majority at a single site in Northumberland.
