Cold Seals - a photo on Flickriver

Cold Seals

            There are two different types of seal in this photograph.  The patterned one that looks like a roll of Axminster carpet is a Weddell Seal, and the plain one at the back is a Crabeater Seal.  They are both common seals down in Antarctica but they usually seek out their own species to hang out with.  I was quite surprised to see one of each lying together.  But they don't really compete with each other as the Weddell Seal eats mainly fish with a few squid and prawns.  Whereas the Crabeater, despite its name, specialises on krill.  I took the photograph near Neko Harbour in Antarctica at latitude 64.8331° south.  This is so far south many of the bays are chock-a-block with ice that has calved from the numerous glaciers.
