2021 - Vancouver - Commercial Drive Sign - 2 of 4

            Commercial Drive (CD) in Vancouver's Grandview-Woodlands is possibly the last remaining commercial street in Vancouver that has not, so far, succumbed to the raze and build a condo craze.

Between Broadway and Venables, 15 city blocks, there are few chain stores, but lots of independent retailers, coffee shops, restaurants, etc. with an interesting mix of architecture characteristic of early Vancouver.

The street also has many signs indicative of its independent nature.  Here is #2 of 4.

CAFÉ CALABRIA:
Founded in Vancouver’s “Little Italy”  in 1976 by Francesco Murdocco, Calabria is the oldest Italian coffee house in Vancouver.  

At opening it was one of several private men’s clubs on Commercial Drive.  Francesco was uncomfortable limiting access so not long after opening he dropped the men only requirement.

Reproductions of Roman statues and the Cistine Chapel's ceiling ads to the decor and the walls are decked with pictures of the family and many visitors over the years.

The cafe specializes in Italian style sandwiches (paninis), an Italian deli, mini bakery and gelato shop.
