2020 - Chile - Punta Arenas - Vandalized Moviestar Building

            This would be the Moviestar cellular store on Av. Cristobal Colón.  It appears to have suffered some serious gunshot wounds and or rock throwing.  Unfortunately the building is next door to Casa de los Derechos Humanos (House of Human Rights).

Casa de los Derechos Humanos was the main torture and interrogation centre in the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region and home of the Military Intelligence Service (SIM) and was also a focal point of the riots for its negative historical significance.

Unrest in Chile has continued since an uprising in October 2019 when the right wing president raised subway fares in Santiago setting off a firestorm of protests.

The unrest has exposed divisions in the nation, one of the region's wealthiest but also one of its most unequal, and intensified calls for economic reforms. 

The unrest follows simmering discontent in some of the country's universities and schools over lack of resources and underfunding.

The protests began following a 4% hike in fares for Santiago’s metro service, with university students and high-school students calling on passengers to jump over the metro turnstiles to avoid paying the higher fees. 

Since then, the protests have developed to encompass a movement to force the right-wing government, led by sitting president Sebastián Piñera, to improve living conditions. 

The context of the demonstrations is a society where rising living costs and low wages have resulted in high levels of inequality. 

Hmmmm, show me a country not experiencing the same or worse inequality gap.

Since October 2019, these demonstrations have escalated to violent protest, with metro stations and other buildings set alight. 

After President Piñera announced a State of Emergency, the military was deployed and over 20,000 soldiers are now on the streets of the capital and in other parts of the country.

Weekend protests with buildings burned down and police officers using lots of teargas have occurred in Punta Arenas.

Our visit was a Sunday and officials had extra security on the streets as often Sunday is a major day of "peaceful" protest.  We were warned to avoid any groups of protester encountered - of which we saw none this day.

Protests in the Magallanes region as being coordinated and mostly peaceful, incorporating various forms of dissent and social inclusion. 

Attendance has varied, from large crowds to demonstrations on a lesser scale. “A kind of routine has been established. 

Protestors gather in the main square of the city once or twice a week. There they meet and sing songs played by a group of volunteer musicians, after which they march around the city centre. 

Unfortunately, at the end of these peaceful marches, there are usually some isolated acts of vandalism and clashes between some protesters and police.

 In some cases commercial premises were damaged or destroyed, but there have also been recurring violations of the human rights of detained protestors.
