Sanderling (adult, non-breeding migrant)

            More photos from our annual visit to Bird Island | Seychelles - a privately owned, remote, coral sand cay island situated in the Indian Ocean just south of the equator, some 1200km off the East African coast - the northernmost island of the Seychelles archipelago.

Sanderling (Calidris alba)
A tubby little wader, which runs and feeds energetically along the shoreline, picking in the wake of the receding tide before scampering ahead of the next incoming wave. Non-breeding birds are silver grey above, white below and with short black legs. Immature birds have a much darker, almost chequered pattern, back.   Breeding plumage is much darker with head, neck and upper breast a rufous colour, heavily spotted black, but maintaining the pure white underparts. Breeds on the high-Arctic tundra, from northern Canada to Greenland, Spitsbergen and Russia.  Wintering birds can be found almost anywhere around the coasts of the world through North and South America, Europe, Africa, India, South-East Asia and as far south as northern Australia.  It’s another annual migrant to the Seychelles from about October to March.
