Coelogyne usitana

            One of my earlier work, while I was still refining my lighting technique, I like this image for it composition, and it was taken during a monthly orchid meeting.  This orchid flowers always bloom facing down, and with several other photographers wanting to photograph it, I sat back and watched what they were doing.  Most will lift the flower upright, others will place the flower on a flat surface. I felt that it would alter the flower form making it look unnatural.  

When it was my turn, I shifted the plant such that the background is the bright sky, lied down on the ground and shoot up at a 45 degree angle while my wife held a speedlite at a 45 degree pointing down on the subject.  It took several adjustments to get the right shot.  I tried to use as low a shutter speed as possible so that the background is blown out and just enough F value for the leaf to be OOF.  

Photoshop is used to sharpen, increase the vibrancy, and adjust the levels for the final output. 

5DM3 + Sigma 150mm Macro + 580exII + umbrellas

No plants nor flowers were pluck, cut or hurt during the photography.
