Flying Over Mt Blanca - a photo on Flickriver

            The wingspan of adult Greater Sandhill Cranes (Antigone canadensis) ranges from 5 ft 5 inches to 7 ft 7 inches.  When a flock of these impressively large birds fly low overhead it is an awesome spectacle.  We spent a nice winter day at the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge for the Sandhill Crane Festival.  There were fewer human attendees than usual, but the Sandhill Cranes showed up in large numbers, as well as large flocks of Canadian Geese, several species of duck, and scores of Red-Winged Blackbirds.
