The Birch Catherderal - a photo on Flickriver

            Ah, the final 2 miles of the Greenstone Ridge Trail from West Chickenbone to Hatchet Lake on Isle Royale. It's like walking through a grand birch cathedral, complete with towering trunks and a leafy canopy that seems to stretch on forever. The pine needles cushion your every step, as if Mother Nature herself is giving you a gentle pat on the back. You half expect to see woodland creatures singing hymns and holding choir practice in the branches above. But don't be fooled by the tranquil beauty - this is nature's version of an endurance test. By the time you reach Hatchet Lake Campground, you'll feel like you've survived a holy pilgrimage, and you'll have the sore muscles to prove it. Praise be to the great outdoors!
