Kirtland's Snake (Clonophis kirtlandii)

            The Kirtland's Snake belongs to the monotypic genus Clonophis, which means there are no other representatives within this taxonomic category.  These snakes have declined throughout much of their range.  This is likely due in large part to the draining or channelizing of their sensitive wetlands for development and agriculture. Other factors such as disease, pollution, road mortality and other stressors may also have a role. These snakes, however, are still hanging on in some disturbed areas.  They are notoriously found in city lots, drainages and parks. They primarily feed on soft-bodied invertebrates such as worms and slugs and spend much of their time within the burrows of crayfish and other subterranean retreats. They can also be found under unnatural and natural cover near permanent and semi-permanent water.
