Speckled Racer (Drymobius margaritiferus)

            Speckled Racers are a wide-ranging species that primarily inhabit thick forests and lowland swamps from Columbia in South America north through Central America and into extreme south Texas in the United States.  In south Texas they are strongly associated with the stands of Rio Grande Palmetto (Sabal mexicana) where they will quickly retreat beneath the thick layers of fallen fronds that accumulate at the base of the trees.  The generic name "Drymobius" actually means "forest dweller."

The further south you go into their range, the blue/green scalation pigment turns to yellow/green.

This past trip I was able to see two on a sunny, warm day.   On my last trip to the LRGV in 2009 (exactly 10 years ago) we saw a total of four on one day.
