Autumnal Aletsch

            A day like in a picture book: The autumn colours in the Aletsch region fascinate me again and again with the red of the blueberry bushes, the yellow of the dry grasses and the blue of the small lakes high on the Moosfluh. In addition, there is the magnificent view of the Great Aletsch Glacier in the background. (Valais, Switzerland)
The other side: the traces of climate change are all too clearly visible here on the glacier. Measurements by the Pro Natura Center Aletsch show that the Great Aletsch Glacier is experiencing dramatic ablation, shrinking by up to 50 metres in length each year and retreating significantly at the edges.

Ein Tag wie im Bilderbuch: Die Herbstfarben im Aletschgebiet faszinieren mich immer wieder aufs Neue mit dem Rot der Heidelbeersträucher, dem Gelb der verdörrten Gräser und das Blau der kleinen Seen hoch auf der Moosfluh. Dazu kommt noch die grandiose Aussicht auf den Grossen Aletschgletscher im Hintergrund. (Wallis, Schweiz)

Die Kehrseite: Die Spuren des Klimawandels sind hier am Gletscher nur allzu deutlich sichtbar. Die Beobachtungen des Pro Natura Zentrums Aletsch haben ergeben, dass der Grosse Aletschgletscher mit einem jährlichen Längenverlust von bis zu 50 Metern und einem drastischen Rückgang an den Gletscherrändern besonders stark von der Abschmelzung betroffen ist.
