Z50_1591 - Foulridge Tunnel - a photo on Flickriver

            Foulridge Tunnel (South Portal), Leeds-Liverpool Canal, Lancashire, UK

The Foulridge 'Mile' Tunnel on the Leeds Liverpool Canal is exactly 1640 yards long (so 120 yards shorter than a true 'mile'). Completed in 1796, the tunnel was the single most expensive item on the 127-mile long canal. A major engineering achievement taking over 5 years to complete at the cost of many lives.
It has no towpath, so towhorses were walked along the surface, whilst the barges were 'legged' through. 'Leggers' were men laid on their backs on the top of the barges, pushing with their legs against the tunnel walls - the journey took a minimum of one and a half hours. A two hourly interval was originally used, but this has now been replaced by traffic lights. The tunnel is so straight that daylight can be seen from one side to the other.
'Buttercup', a dairy cow belonging to farmer Robinson Brown of Blue Slate Farm fell into the water at the Barrowford end of the Mile Tunnel on Tuesday 24th September 1912. On emerging from the tunnel at the other end (Foulridge), Buttercup was hauled to dry land by her owner and two farm hands and was revived on the bank with the help of a large measure of whisky. Just fifteen days later the remarkable bovine legend became the mother of a sturdy calf! (info - Pendle Tourist Information leaflet)
